Preliminary

LEGISLATIVE AIDES APPOINTMENT LAW, 1999

Section 1

1. Citation and commencement. This Law may be cited as the Legislative Aides Appointment Law, 1999 and shall be deemed to have come into force on the 3rd day of June, 1999.

Section 2

2. Interpretation. In this Law - "constituency office" means the office of a legislator in his constituency; "House" means Delta State House of Assembly; "legislative aides" means legislative assistants and confidential secretary; "member" means honourable member of the House; "State" means Delta State of Nigeria.

Section 3

3. Appointments. (1) A member shall employ three legislative aides. (2) Pursuant to subsection (1) above the legislative aides are- (a) one legal assistant; (b) two legislative assistants; and (c) one private secretary. [Amended by the Legislative Aides Appointment (Amendment) Law, w.e.f. 3 July, 2007.]

Section 4

4. Remuneration. The legal assistant, the legislative and the private secretary shall be on salary grade levels 15 step 8,14 step 4 and 14 step 8 respectively. [Amended by the Legislative Aides Appointment (Amendment) Law, w.e.f. 3 July, 2007.]

Section 5

5. Staff on appointments. Any legislative aide employed by a member before the inception of this Law shall be deemed to have been employed pursuant to section 3 of this Law.

Section 6

6. Tenure of office. A legislative aide shall vacate office at the pleasure of the member that employed him. [Amended by the Legislative Aides Appointment (Amendment) Law, w.e.f. 3 July, 2007.]

Section 7

7. Constituency liaison offices. Every legislator shall establish and operate a functional constituency liaison office which shall be run and maintained from the Revenue of the State.
